Sophie’s Cleaning Tips
Top tips to help de-clutter your home this spring
When you look around your home, what do you see? A tidy, ordered haven of peace and tranquillity, with a place for everything and everything in its place – or a house which looks as if a miniature bomb has exploded, leaving piles of papers, children’s toys and old newspapers strewn on every surface? If your home resembles the latter rather than the former, perhaps it is time to think about shifting some of the clutter and reclaiming your home, not to mention your peace of mind.
Thankfully, spring is now upon us – the time of year officially reserved for cleaning up and getting rid of clutter and the physical and emotional detritus of the previous year. If you can’t wait to get your hands dirty but are feeling a little daunted by the (seemingly) immense task at hand – or perhaps you are just not quite sure how to begin – read on and discover 3 excellent ways to get your home looking neat and tidy in time for the summer.
Break it down
When you are confronted by a house which seems to be bursting with junk and unwanted clutter, the very size of the task ahead of you can leave you feeling frustrated and de-motivated before you even begin. The key to overcoming this psychological issue is to break your spring-cleaning process down into small manageable chunks. Go room by room – or even shelf by shelf or drawer by drawer, if you are feeling particularly flummoxed – focusing solely on the area you are cleaning at the time, and before you know it you will have gone through the entire house.
The 3 Box Trick
This is a de-cluttering tool popularised by various American sitcoms and popular TV shows. Take 3 big cardboard boxes and label them: “Rubbish”, “Give Away” and “Keep”. Place every item in each room into one of those boxes – but remember to be brutal in the process, or you’ll end up with an overflowing “Keep” box and hardly anything to throw out or give away.
Storage
Storage units are one of the most useful tools to cut down on clutter, whether this simply refers to pretty wicker boxes in your bedroom or an actual storage facility where you can put everything you don’t want to throw away but which you don’t currently need.
