Tips for Safely Hand Washing Silver Cutlery
Silver cutlery looks beautiful, and while it may take a little more effort to take care of it than typical stainless steel knives, forks and spoons, it can be worth it for the elegant feel of real silver, and the beautiful lustre it offers. If you have a set of silver cutlery you would like to be making more use of, there is no need to be afraid of damaging it. It isn’t that hard to keep your silver pieces clean and safe, when you know how.
While it is possible to wash sterling silver in a dishwasher, a lot of people do feel better doing it by hand, as this is a less aggressive form of cleaning. When you need to wash your cutlery in the sink, avoid contact between the silver pieces and the sink itself, because contact between different metals can scratch the silver or cause unwanted reactions that can leave spots or tarnished areas. The easiest way to do this is by using a plastic washing up bowl, but if you don’t have one of those you can lay a tea towel you don’t mind getting wet at the base of the sink before you start washing.
Use a very gentle washing up liquid that doesn’t contain acids like citrus. This will be kinder to the silver. Gently rinse off any particles of food, and then use a clean sponge or cloth with warm water and your chosen detergent to clean off any grease. Silver knives tend to be the most delicate thing because of the way they are made, so start with those, and then move on to your forks and spoons. Dry your silver cutlery gently with a tea towel or kitchen paper, and you will have them restored to their original beauty!
