Sophie’s Cleaning Tips
Household Cleaning:
Tips for maintaining that just-bought feel in your kitchen.
It began life as a dream, and with hard work, months of planning and hours of groveling to the finance company your dream kitchen slowly became a reality.
But whats happened? Just a few months later and its already showing signs of daily usage.
Don’t worry! These horror stories are quite normal and with these tips and tricks your kitchen will be as good as new. So grab the rubber gloves because you’ll be using very hot water!
Grease stains
A great way to remove built up grease is to fill a 1 litre spray-mist bottle (the type you spray the plants with) with hot water and 4 tablespoons of baking soda. For heavily stained grease increase this to 5 tablespoons. Spray onto the greasy areas. Leave this to soak in for at least an hour. The baking soda breaks down and absorbs the grease. Next, run a cloth over a small area to see if the grease shifts. If its being particularly stubborn, just spray it again and leave for another hour. Once the grease has started to loosen, mix a cup of vinegar into a small bowl of very hot water. Soak a clean cloth in the solution and those hideous greasy marks will be gone.
Fridge odours
The best way, (and in my opinion the only way), to banish odours from the fridge is to clean it with hot water and bicarbonate of soda.
Remove all the food and take out the shelves and other removable compartments. They will need cleaning too as they would have picked up the smell from the fridge.
Take a cup of bicarbonate of soda and mix this with a small bowl of hot water. Take a clean cloth and starting from the top wipe the inside of the fridge, making sure you get into all the little corners and shelf ridges. Clean the salad box, the shelves and all the other compartments in the same solution of water.
Once this is done there is no need to rinse. Allow the fridge and all shelves etc to dry naturally by keeping the door open. There is no need to turn the fridge off either. Allow about an hour for the fridge to air and then return all the shelves and other bits and bobs. Your fridge is now ready to use and the nasty niff will be gone!
