Sophie’s Cleaning Tips
If you’re one of the few students who reads the entirety of their housing contract before signing away, then you’ll already know that there’s a lot of things your student housing company do not want you to do. Blu-tack leaves greasy stains on painted walls, we all know that, but did you know that some housing companies will fine you to repaint the whole wall if there’s just one incy-wincy stain? Well, fear not, gentle students! Here are some tips on how to knock back those nasty fines:
Blu-tack stains – One option is to paint over it, but it can be quite tricky trying to get the exact same colour without it being obvious. Instead, I recommend pouring some boiling water into a mug of roughly two tablespoons of washing up liquid and two tablespoons of sugar. Now take an old toothbrush and get to work scrubbing those stains. It might take a few goes, and you’ll have to wait for the wall to dry in between, but eventually the stain should disappear. Just make sure you keep the solution hot!
Carpet stains – The first thing you should know about carpet stains is never start scrubbing. Scrubbing the stain will spread the damage and lock the chemicals into the fibers. Instead, you should gently dab at the stain with a towel until you’ve soaked as much of it up as you can. You should aim to tackle your stain as quickly as possible, and a good first move is to spray the stain with white vinegar and leave it for a few minutes. Once the stain has absorbed the vinegar, you can get right in and scrub.
Alcohol stains – Before you get to work on removing alcohol stains from your favourite clothes, you need to know what you’re working with. Beer stains will usually just take a good wash, whereas wine stains are going to need some white vinegar and elbow grease. A general rule applies to most alcohol: pre-soak it in some cold water for twenty minutes first. Pre-soaking followed by gently rubbing stain remover directly on the stain will lift the chemicals away from the fabric. The washer machine should deal with the rest.’
